Everyone here I'm sure has heard about the national day of action to honor the President- Elect's Inauguration. If you haven't, here is the skinny.
From an email from the next First Lady:
It will take ordinary citizens working together with a common purpose to get this country back on track. This national day of service is an important first step in our continuing commitment.
Now is the time to remind all Americans what ordinary people can accomplish when we stand together.
I've been busy organizing an event for the 19th as well. With more than a few others I'll be busy helping homeless veterans in Las Vegas.
VoteVets.org's Nevada Chapter will be organizing the event and is inviting everyone in Las Vegas to come and participate. What a fantastic way to give back to the community. To serve those who have served us, and have fallen on hard times. The program we are helping is without a doubt one of the best structured social programs I have ever seen.
A mission statement from the U.S. Vets' Website:
Over 200,000 veterans will sleep on the streets of our nation tonight.
Our VISION is that one day there will no longer be homeless veterans in America...
U.S. VETS provides housing, counseling, job assistance, and HOPE to thousands of homeless veterans each year. Our programs foster the skills necessary for every veteran to return to the community and remain self-sufficient.

While teaching a man to fish so he can eat for a lifetime is indeed a cliché, like most clichés, there is a whole lot of truth and value in them. I wish we had programs like this to serve all of our less fortunate members of society.
I figured, what better way to give back to the community then to help this program. I've worked with my fellow vets down there in this program and have been incredibly impressed with the program. The staff is nothing short of remarkable and dedicated to what they do.
Basically the way we have this set is we will get as many folks down there as possible and take care of all the jobs we can. Right now it is shaping to be a decent amount of painting. All the materials are going to be supplied as I was able to secure some funding. I will take note of how many people have RSVP'd and will figure out what exactly what we will doing and have the jobs ready for the day.
If you are in Las Vegas, why not join us? Join VoteVets.org by assisting the U.S. Vets facility by doing chores. Please come dressed in clothes you are able to work in, as again, we may even be painting. Even if you are unable to stay and volunteer at U.S. Vets, we encourage you to donate as well. Business clothes, regular clothes, games, cards, or any other practical items you may have are encouraged as well as cash donations to the program.
